The westernmost of the Aeolian archipelago, is located about 34 nautical miles west of Lipari, a municipality on it depends. • Contrada Pianicello, which is located at the same height as S. Bartolo, but further west and is inhabited by a native German speaking population from Switzerland. This small fraction uses the electricity supplied by the photovoltaic systems and the rainwater collected by exploiting the ancient tanks of the houses. Most of the inhabitants have also resumed cultivating some traditional crops such as vines and olives.
• Contrada Sgurbio, which is at the same height as S. Bartolo, but on the east side of the island. This tiny hamlet is made up of five houses, each of which has the name of one of the senses.
The postwar heather island was inhabited by over 600 people, most of whom emigrated to Australia over the next few decades. Currently the population has about 100 inhabitants.
